Barbara Schumacher, 79, Ashley, died Jan. 8, 2004, at an Ashley medical center. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague, with the Revs. Wendelyn Vetter and Andrew Jasinski officiating.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 7:30 p.m. today at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, with a rosary and wake being held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Honorary casketbearers will be Edwin and Edna Strobel, John and Phyllis Salzer, Adam and Edna Schilling, Sylvester and Florence Meier and Walter and Edna Helfenstein. Casketbearers will be Norbert Feist Jr., Jason Baumgartner, Deon Wolff, Todd Schumacher, Jerry Jangula, Alvin Wald, Lee Wald and Herman Bauer.

The organist is Nicole Hulm, and there will be special music performed by Becky Hootz and Amanda Schumacher. Mass server is Steve Kollar. Lectors are Marri Fishel and Rhonda Feist, and Offertory gifts will be presented by Denise Schumacher, LaDawn Kleven and Janel Anglick.

Barbara Glatt, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Sahli) Glatt, was born Jan. 11, 1924, at Hague, N.D. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. She was united in marriage to Adam Schumacher on Oct. 19, 1943, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Hague.

They made their home on the Schumacher homestead. They were involved in grain farming and milking. In 1956, they built a 50 stall barn with modern equipment. In 1973, they sold the dairy cattle and got into beef cattle.

In 1986, they moved into Ashley. She then helped at J.P. Lounge. In 1993, they were honored to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Her husband died Jan. 20, 1997. Barbara then helped out at the Ashley Motel, and continued to make Ashley her home.
Barbara enjoyed sewing and making Halloween costumes that showed her creativity and fun side. She also liked to clean and paint.

She was a member of St. David's Catholic Church at Ashley.

She is survived by five daughters, Selma Schumacher, Bismarck, Caroline (John) Puskedra, Maple Grove, Minn., Bernadette Wolff, Lakeville, Minn., Janice Schumacher, Phoenix, and Judy (Gene) Heier, Eden Prairie, Minn.; four sons, Dennis Schumacher, Ashley, David (Sylvia) Schumacher, Shakopee, Minn., Robert (Cindy) Schumacher, Zeeland, and Dean Schumacher, Ashland, Kan.; three sisters, Mary (Jim) Manley, Galt, Calif., Clara (Lee) Olson, Phoenix, and Mildred (Bill) Wald, Venturia; four brothers, Ben (Bertha) Glatt, Bismarck, Pete (Phyllis) Glatt, Strasburg, Jack (Barbara) Glatt, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Alvin (Grace) Glatt, Rowland Heights, Calif.; one great-aunt, Julie Kelvie, Minneapolis; one great-uncle, Frank Sahli, Fergus Falls, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son-in-law, Elton Wolff; two sisters, Lena Bauer and Katie Jangula; and two infant brothers.
