Jerome Sahli, 85
Jerome J. Sahli (Jerry) passed away on August 3, 2009 at St Vincent’s Nursing Home in Bismarck North Dakota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 7, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., in the Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with Father Paul Becker officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., in the Bismarck Funeral Home. Interment will be Friday, at 1:00 p.m., at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan.
Jerome will always be remembered as the kind, friendly, happy and loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle to those surviving him.
Jerry was born on August 12, 1923, in Hague, ND to John and Helen (Schatz) Sahli and grew up in Hankinson, North Dakota. He attended Hankinson Public School and St. Francis Academy. He was active in sports, lettering in football and basketball and also playing baseball. He worked as a management trainee for Red Owl Stores in Aberdeen S.D. In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and mobilized from Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin and demobilizing from there in 1945. During his service he served with the 457 Ordinance Evac Co. in theatres of Central Europe, England, and Germany. He served on a tank retriever and was also driver for his Company Commander. He was indeed part of the greatest generation.
After his return he began working for the Soo Line Railroad in 1946. He was a loyal Soo Line employee from 1946-1983 in the capacity of a traveling agent. He worked in Minnesota, North and South Dakota and the general office in Minneapolis MN, retiring as an agent in Napoleon, North Dakota.
Jerry married Lucille Bladow on Sept. 14, 1949 where they lived in South Haven, Minnesota, Moffit, ND, Napoleon, ND and eventually residing in Bismarck, ND after retiring. He was very active in his family and was the constant worrier always worrying about others before himself. He was a great mentor and friend. He will be dearly missed.
Jerome is survived by his wife: Lucille, Bismarck; Daughters: Teresa Sahli, Denver, CO, Jane Sahli, Bismarck; Sons: Mike (Mary) Sahli, Bismarck, Mark (Amy) Sahli, West Fargo, Jeff (Debbie) Sahli, Bismarck, ND; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; Brothers: Ervin (Norma) Sahli, Fridley, MN, Roger (Ginny) Sahli, Waubun, MN; Sisters: Virginia Hartley, Maple Grove, MN, Dolorita (Peter) Schmitz, Burnsville, MN, Linda (Leo) Elkie, St. Michael, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, son Steven and brother Virgil. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to be sent to: Am Vets Club Post #9, 2402 Railroad Ave, Bismarck ND 58501 or Bismarck VFW, 1326 E Broadway Ave, Bismarck ND 58501
